Lukas Mühl has left FC Winterthur to join SSV Jahn Regensburg. The 29-year-old centre-back signed a contract with the German third-division club until 30 June 2027 after his deal in Switzerland expired.
The move is a free transfer. Mühl is expected to fill the gap left by injured captain Felix Strauss. Strauss suffered a cruciate ligament tear and a meniscus injury in an away match at VfB Stuttgart II and will be out for several months.
Sporting director Alexander Schmalhofer welcomed the signing. He described the new arrival as an experienced defensive specialist who can help the team sportingly and character-wise. Mühl himself is happy about the quick agreement and returning to his eastern Bavarian homeland.
Defender's Career Path
The 1.90-metre-tall right-footer played for FC Winterthur in the Swiss Super League for the past two years. Previously, he was active in Italy with Spezia Calcio and in Austria with Austria Wien, where he even became team captain and played in European competition. He began his career in the youth academy of 1. FC Nürnberg, for whose first team he made a total of 133 competitive appearances between 2015 and 2021.
FC Winterthur must now cope with departures in the squad without Mühl. The team currently sits second in the Challenge League with 18 points and has won three and drawn two of its last five matches. The next challenge awaits on 9 October in the away fixture against Neuchatel Xamax FC.
A potential debut for Mühl at Jahn Regensburg could come as early as 6 October in the Bavarian Cup against SpVgg Unterhaching.
